ABOUT THE ARTIST
I began painting seriously around 10 years ago after retiring from a very different working life. What started as a quiet, creative interest quickly grew into a daily practice. I have also found an interest in printing and like to produce moody, atmospheric prints.
I have spent many weeks travelling around South Africa over the last few years. It is a beautiful country. I have explored many of the South African National Parks and seen amazing animals 'up close'. I have also spent time by the coast and this has been a source of inspiration for my seascapes. I love to listen to the sound of the sea or to walk along a deserted beach and 'take in' the vast horizons and expanse of ocean. I love the rugged and wild coast of South Africa, scattered with rusty shipwrecks, and I am 'in awe' of the power and energy of the ocean and waves.
I like to use my own experiences and photographs as inspiration for my paintings and printing. I hope that my travels in South Africa, together with this visual language, will shape my art work in the future.
My current work focuses on expressive seascapes - often in rich, textured layers of oil paint - capturing the movement, stillness, and emotional pull of the ocean. I aim to translate the sense of standing on a beach: the colour, the light, the space to breathe, and the quite power of the water.
Painting has become a way for me to reflect, explore and express myself. I hope my work brings some of that feeling - of calm, wonder, and possibility - into the spaces where it's seen.
Stop for a moment and look.
